Diplomatic activities to solve the Libyan crisis have increased in the past few days, with the United Kingdom and Russia both sending envoys to the country for mediation.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague visited Benghazi on Saturday to meet Libyan rebel political leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil and his colleagues on the National Transitional Council.
Hague showed support for the council, saying it's the legitimate representative of the Libyan people. Hague also visited wounded rebel fighters at a city medical centre and afterwards toured streets meeting local residents.
Meanwhile Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says it will send a special envoy to both Tripoli and Benghazi, to try and get the two sides to reach a compromise. Russia abstained from the UN Security Council resolution vote in March to impose a no-fly zone over Libya. In May, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said ceasefire, dialogue and finally an agreement between the conflicting sides in Libya cannot be avoided.
