The Libyan capital of Tripoli has witnessed the heaviest day of bombardment since international forces began air strikes in March. NATO war planes made repeated strikes on different parts of the city, including Gaddafi's residential compound.
Dozens of loud explosions rocked Tripoli Tuesday as NATO air-strikes hit a military base and Muammar Gaddafi's Bab al-Aziziya military compound.
Witnesses said a huge fire erupted in the compound, but Libyan civil defence teams managed to douse the fire. Smoke could also be seen rising from a nearby military base.
Libya's state TV reported that Gaddafi's residence was under intensive continuous bombardment, while a government spokesman claimed a total of 60 rockets had hit the city that day. Buildings and infrastructure in the surrounding area were destroyed in the strikes.
