Godwin Asem returned a net score of 71 to win the maiden Vardon Odonkor Memorial Open Golf Championship played at the Tema Country Golf Course on Saturday. Brigadier-General (rtd) Joseph Odei came second with 73 net with Emmanuel Tetteh Mensah placing third with 74 net. In the Group ‘B’ segment, Ebenezer Ayanful came first with 68 net, Charles Sailesh took the second position with 71 net whiles Chris Aidoo placed third with 72 net. Ragheda Khalil won the Ladies encounter with 72 net, beating Adelaide Owusu-Adjapong on count-back, while Helen Appah won the Ladies Group ‘B’ segment with 82 net, beating Angela Ayanful on count-back. In the Professional’s Division, John Mawuli came first with 73 net, with Ernest Opoku taking the second position with 74 net, beating Victor Brave-Mensah on count-back. The one-day 18-Hole event was played in memory of the late Vardon Odonkor, Vice President of the Tema Country Golf Club, who died some five years ago. It attracted more than 100 golfers. Joseph Nettey, Captain of the Tema Country Golf Club, said the late Odonkor contributions to the club was immense and made the club what it is today. He said the club had instituted a tree-planting nursery in memory of the late Odonkor and called on the members to contribute at least a seedling to make the project a success.
