Former Chairman of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) Mr. George Lutterodt believes a united Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) could propel Ghana sports to greater heights. Mr. Lutterodt in an interview with the GNA said Ghana sports can grow with a united and dedicated GOC under its new leader Mr. Ben Nunoo-Mensah. ‘‘I believe with a united GOC, Ghana sports will progress and with Ben Nunoo-Mensah’s determination to succeed during his four year tenure, I know he will lift Ghana sports to a higher level.’’ He described the new GOC President as a team player and believes with his leadership qualities he will succeed. Mr. Lutterodt said European countries such as the UK raises funds from sports lottery and other sources and called on the GOC President to do same to finance the various sports Associations in the country. ‘‘One of the main challenges of the GOC is finance. And the current board would have to look at how best to finance the federations.” “I expect Nunoo-Mensah to devise new ways of raising funds for the federations. We can get funds from the sports lottery to finance Ghana sports. The UK did it and I hope Nunoo- Mensah will do that. We can’t be soliciting for funds from the same companies like Coco cola and the rest all the time”. Nunoo-Mensah, who doubles as the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) President polled 33 votes to unseat Prof. Francis Dodoo, who had 28 votes at the GOC’s elective congress held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra last Wednesday.
