Mr. Shaibu Yakubu, coach of the three-member Para Taekwondo team, which represented Ghana at the just ended Third African Taekwondo Para Championship held in Agadir, Morocco, has made an appeal to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to support them financially to enable them to qualify for the 2020 Paralympic Games.
Mr. Yakubu who made the appeal in an interview with the GNA Sports in Casablanca, noted that the team has the potential to excel but needed financial and logistical support to boost its training, as well as participation in international competitions.
He said the Gen-1 censor socks the team was using was outmoded and needed the Gen-two to facilitate its training.
Even though Ghana failed to win medal after reaching quarter-finals stage, the team made up of two males and a female; Stephen Sansah, Azumah Salih Mohammed and Rubrura Awudu, was optimistic of excelling in the Paralympic Games, which comes off in Tokyo.
According to him, the team’s chances of qualifying for the Paralympic Games would be enhanced by regular participation in international competitions.
“We love our nation and want to make it proud”, the Coach indicated.
He was full of praise for the Ghana National Taekwondo Federation that solicited assistance from organisations and individuals that enabled them to participate in the Championship, adding that it was disheartening to go through financial and logistical struggles which had been their bane for years.
More than 92 countries including Ghana, Thailand, Tunisia, Morocco, Croatia, Serbia, Russia, Brazil and some European countries participated in this year’s African Para Taekwondo held in Agadir on Wednesday, March 28.
