The Junior Springboks wiped out a halftime deficit to edge Georgia 33-27 in their opening match of the World Rugby Under-20 Championships in France.
It wasn't the most fluent performance, as the South Africans made a plethora of mistakes in trying to force pace -- especially in the first half -- against the highly competitive and physical Georgians. But the Boks did enough in the second half to start their campaign on a winning note.
It looked like it would be cruise for the South Africans when they took the lead via centre Wandisile Simelane after some good interplay. But Georgia hit back with a smart try by centre Lasha Lomidze, which scrumhalf Gela Aprasidze converted, before slotting another penalty a few minutes later.
A few penalties got the Boks back in Georgia's 22, and a they soon regained the lead when No 8 Miller Uys crashed over after a powerful maul by the South Africans.
Georgia, however, took 17-12 lead into the break after wing Demur Tapladze capitalised on a mistake by the Boks in their own 22.
The Junior Boks came out firing in the second half and scored three converted tries through Tyrone Green, Zak Burger and Uys, while Georgia could only manage a penalty.
The South Africans, though, did go through a bit of a scare in the last 10 minutes of the match after replacement prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye was sent to the sin bin for a late tackle on the Georgian fullback.
Luka Gelashvili scored a converted try to cut the Junior Boks' lead to just six points at 33-27 with as many minutes remaining. The Junior Boks, though, managed to hold on for the win.
