When Season Six of the FreshPak National Women's League (NWL) began, Elmina Sea Lions were hopeful of winning the title and playing in the champions play-off.
However, a string of poor results which followed have cost the Elmina-based side who are now fourth in the southern zone as the second round resumes. Sea Lions have declared their intention of staging a comeback though.
Tomorrow, at the Bompeh Park in Takoradi, they face a rather daunting task against zonal leaders, Hasaacas Ladies, in a game both sides will be desperate to win. Hasaacas need a win to hold on firmly to their lead, while the visitors have to lift themselves from the current fourth position.
Coach Eddie Williams, who said at the beginning of the season that they were only interested in winning without being really bothered about the margin, admitted his side might have to work harder to achieve that dream.
He told the Graphic Sports: "At the start of the season, we said we had a good team and we will be happy to win all our matches, and we did not mind whether it was by a big margin or slim margin. All that has not changed and despite having a good side, we seem to be dropping some important points, especially at home, and that has cost us.
“In the second round, we have to be more alert and daring upfront as that is the only way to revive our dream of finishing the season as champions,” he said.
In the first leg, Hasaacas, who themselves are reviving their campaign after a lousy Season Five, won 1-0 at Elmina, a result that lifted them to the top of the log.
In other Match Day Eight games, Immigration Ladies will host Soccer Intellectuals at the Carl Reindorf Park at Dansoman tomorrow, Halifax, now handled by Mercy Tagoe Quarcoo, will welcome Samaria Ladies to the TDC Park at Community Four, with LadyStrikers and Police Ladies slugging it out at the Cape Coast Stadium on Sunday.
