After beating Bristol City, Martin told BBC Radio Solent: "It's a brilliant win but we're not talking about it like that because it was only 1-0.

"We should have won 3-0 or 4-0 - if we (do) nobody can question anything."

The 37-year-old added: "We should score more goals - the last action is just missing at the moment, but we will get there with that. I am really proud of the players.

"We should have got a clean sheet on Saturday but we got one tonight - the lads will build on that. We should have scored more but I'm happy. In the second half that was as good as we've played all season, but because we only scored one goal it was frustrating."

Saints netted 10 goals in their opening four Championship games of the season but have scored just 19 in the 14 fixtures they have played since.

Wednesday's winner at St Mary's came from full-back Kyle Walker-Peters curling into the top-corner from outside the area in the second half.

"I am frustrated it took a moment like that to score because we had so many better moments than that," Martin said.

"He is a beautiful footballer, he possesses that and it's been coming with him, trying to convince him he can score and assist more - it's a brilliant goal."
