Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, has refuted reports claiming that Cabinet has approved a sports levy as a primary source of funding for sports development.
Responding to the reports circulating in sections of the media, the Minister clarified that Cabinet has neither received nor approved any such proposal.
In a post on his social media platforms, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that what Cabinet approved was a proposal for the establishment of a Sports Development Fund—not a levy.
“In the last few days, myjoyonline.com has carried a story to the effect that Cabinet had approved a ‘Sports Levy’ as a primary funding source for the proposed Sports Development Fund,” he wrote.
“They quoted one Evans Yeboah, Treasurer of the Ghana Olympic Committee, as the source of this report. For the avoidance of doubt, NO such levy has been proposed nor approved by Cabinet.”
He noted that a proposed bill had been submitted to Cabinet and approved solely to create a Sports Development Fund, with clearly outlined funding sources.
According to his post, the proposed sources of funding include:
- A percentage of gate proceeds from sports events,
- Sports sponsorships,
- Allocations from Parliament,
- Proceeds from the transfer of Ghanaian athletes, among others.
If passed by Parliament, the Sports Development Fund would serve as a dedicated financial mechanism to support sports development across various disciplines. It is expected to cater to infrastructure development, athlete welfare, and grassroots initiatives.
The fund is also intended to provide sustainable and transparent financing, particularly for disciplines that receive limited funding.
