The New Ghanaian Movement (NGM), a political group that leans to the People's National Convention (PNC), on Tuesday said a government by the party would ensure that local oversight committees are used to monitor various uses of public funds in order to promote efficiency and accountability in the execution of development projects.
"The PNC estimates that waste in the public sector amounts to at least 30 per cent of the budget or even higher," a statement signed by Mr Kofi Kankam, Ashanti Regional Representative of NGM, said.
It said a PNC administration would ensure that duplication or multiplication of procedures in the government sector were eliminated or drastically reduced without needlessly disrupting the efficiency of the affected institutions.
The statement said any ministry or public body that submitted any policy or project for implementation by its governing body must strive to obtain a consensus by meaningful consultations with all relevant stakeholders.
"This measure is meant to reduce the incidence of too many arbitrary and ad hoc decisions, projects and programmes that create confusion and often at a high cost and little or no benefit to the taxpayer and the nation," it said.
The statement called for a greater sense of national focus in order to reduce "the present intolerable levels of cost of living and suffering" of the population, unemployment, corruption, rampant crime and increasing indiscipline.
It appealed to the electorate to vote the PNC into office for real change in their livelihoods, economic growth and prosperity.
