Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party rejected on Monday an initiative proposed by deposed premier of Hamas in Gaza Ismail Haneya over forming a large national unity government.
In a rally organized by Hamas in Gaza to mark its 22 founding anniversary, Haneya called on all factions to form a large national accordance government to end the status of division among the Palestinians.
Jamal Mheisen, member of Fatah central committee, told Xinhua that his movement rejects Haneya's proposal, adding that there is an Egyptian-drafted pact of reconciliation that Hamas should accept and sign on.
"Before offering initiatives or proposals, Hamas movement should first sign on the reconciliation pact," said Mheisen, adding that "if Hamas is serious to end the split, it should accept and sign on the reconciliation pact."
The Hamas movement, which has been controlling the Gaza Strip since it seized control of the enclave in June 2007, still refusing to sign on the
Egyptian pact of reconciliation, saying that there are some points need to be amended.
However, Fatah movement accepted the pact and expressed readiness to sign on it in order to end the current status of rift between the two big
leading Palestinian movements.
