BlackBerry unveiled at CES the QNX Software Development Platform 7.0 (QNX SDP 7.0), a new embedded 64-bit OS for the automotive industry that builds on its QNX technology. The new OS will be demonstrated in BlackBerry QNX's 2016 Jaguar XJ and 2017 Lincoln MKZ concept cars.
QNX SDP 7.0 provides kernel-level security through an array of features. Its role is to guard against system malfunctions, malware, and cyber attacks by implementing a multi-level, policy-driven security model that incorporates security technology from BlackBerry.
Other QNX technologies will be presented during the 2016 Jaguar XJ demonstration, namely BlackBerry QNX hypervisor software, which separates and isolates the infotainment system and graphics, QNX Cluster graphics monitor that can detect failures in the safety system, as well as BlackBerry's QNX Acoustics Management Platform (AMP) for clear HD in-car communication, active noise control, and engine sound enhancement. The QNX Cluster graphics monitor was created in cooperation with Rightware Cluster UI, the company said.
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities showcased in the Lincoln MKZ prototype vehicle demonstration were developed by BlackBerry QNX with Renesas, the University of Waterloo, and Polysync. Using various technologies, the car can detect obstacles on the road, anticipate dangerous driving situations, and present warnings. Also playing an important role in the car's system besides the QNX SDP 7.0 is the QNX Platform for ADAS which is designed to process data generated from the car's sensors in realtime, and also record and play back the data off-line for feature development and testing.
Besides showcasing its new OS for cars, the company will also present BlackBerry Radar, its hardware and software asset tracking platform for the transportation and logistics industry. Also on display at BlackBerry's CES booth is a 2017 Aston Martin Vanquish model that is now shipping with BlackBerry QNX's latest in-vehicle infotainment software technology.
