Both the precious metals, gold and silver, continued their losing streak for the third straight day Thursday due to a weak global trend. While gold fell by Rs 50 to Rs 20,750 per 10 grams, silver declined by Rs 500 to Rs 52,000 per kg.
Trading sentiments remained bearish after gold dropped to a near one-month low in global markets, as Japan's nuclear crisis intensified, forcing investors to sell metals to raise cash to cover losses in equities and other commodities.
In global markets, gold fell by 0.9 per cent to USD 1,386.65 an ounce and silver edged lower by 1.5 per cent to USD 33.70 an ounce.
Traders said end of the marriage season was another factor behind fall in the prices of precious metals.
On the domestic front, silver ready fell further by Rs 500 to Rs 52,000 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 270 to Rs 51,790 per kg.
Silver coins, too, lost Rs 500 to Rs 56,500 for buying and Rs 57,000 for selling of 100 pieces.
Gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity fell by Rs 50 each to Rs 20,870 and Rs 20750 per 10 grams, respectively.
Sovereigns also declined by Rs 100 to Rs 17,300 per piece of eight grams.
