Mobile Money Limited (MML), a subsidiary of Scancom PLC and a leading mobile financial service provider in Ghana, marked its 15th anniversary with a fraud sensitization roadshow in Lapaz, aimed at educating customers on how to protect their accounts and prevent fraud.
The event was the first of three planned activities to engage customers and raise awareness about mobile money safety measures.
Speaking to BusinessGhana, Ms. Rena Ankrah, Manager Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Fraud at MML emphasized the importance of choosing strong Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) avoiding common mistakes like using birth years or the last digits of phone numbers.
Ms. Ankrah warned that fraudsters often accessed personal information through social media, using it to gain access to mobile money accounts. She highlighted MTN Ghana’s in-house safety measures, including PIN protection, fraud monitoring, and SMS filtering, which blocked over 400 million suspicious messages last year.
Customers were advised to be cautious of suspicious messages and calls, and to report any incidents to MTN Ghana’s customer care line on 0244300000. She also encouraged customers to use the National Communications Authority's short code, *402#, to check which numbers were registered with their Ghana card and report any unfamiliar numbers.
The roadshow is part of MTN Ghana’s efforts to promote a culture of security awareness among customers and prevent mobile money fraud. With various promotions and prizes up for grabs, customers were reminded to be vigilant and verify the authenticity of calls and messages claiming to be from MTN Ghana.
