President John Dramani Mahama has charged Heads of Missions and newly appointed Envoys to promote investment in priority sectors of the country.
The sectors, he said, included industrialisation, renewable energy, digital service, agro-processing, infrastructure, and tourism.
According to him, promoting investment in the country’s priority sectors was important as economic diplomacy was now a cornerstone of Ghana’s foreign policy.
President Mahama gave the charge when he launched the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Heads of Missions at the opening of a five-day conference of Head of Missions and orientation programme for newly appointed envoys.
It was on the theme, “Harnessing the Dividends of Diplomacy for Ghana’s Reset Agenda.”
The aim of the KPIs was to provide a framework of evaluating the performance of newly appointed Envoys.
The KPIs focused on areas such as economic diplomacy, consular service, diaspora engagement, financial management, security and ethical compliance.
President Mahama said, “The distinction between foreign and domestic policy has increasingly become blurred in today’s interconnected world. For this reason, economic diplomacy is now a cornerstone of Ghana’s foreign policy.’’
“Our Missions must evolve into a hub of economic engagement, facilitate trade, attract investment, and promote innovation,” President Mahama added.
He also urged the newly appointed Envoys to exhibit values such as “trust, honesty, humility, and integrity” to ensure winning the trust of Ghanaians, both at home and abroad.
According to President Mahama, the success of the newly appointed Envoys would be measured by the investment, trade and opportunities they were able to secure for Ghanaians.
“Our citizens abroad must experience fairness and respect our diplomacy, our democracy must continue to stand firm in Pan-Africanism,” President Mahama stated.
The government, he said, would champion the establishment of African financial institutions and climate finance.
President Mahama said the KPIs would ensure that every Mission aligns with national priorities and delivers measurable results.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the government had put in place some initiatives to resource the Envoys to help them deliver their services efficiently.
Among the initiatives, he said, were the introduction of KPIs allowance, plus special citation from President Mahama, introduction of National Day Allowance, and enhanced Hardship Allowance as well as insurance package.
While commending the President for the initiative, the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, who chaired the event, congratulated the Envoys.
He urged them to build bridges, elevating Ghana’s global brand, and engaging with the Ghanaian diaspora and local communities, encouraging them to prioritise trade, business, investments, and development through strategic partnerships.
