In the heart of northern Senegal's arid plains, a quiet yet powerful revolution is underway. At its centre stands La Laiterie du Berger, a pioneering dairy company best known for its transformative role in empowering pastoralist communities, restoring dignity, and building an inclusive economy.
Founded by Senegalese veterinarian Bagoré Bathily, La Laiterie du Berger is the first fresh milk processing company in the country; a bold response to a local market long dominated by imported powdered milk. But beyond dairy, the company's mission is deeply rooted in people, heritage, and hope.
Having returned to Senegal after studying in France, Bagoré saw an opportunity not only to improve nutrition and food sovereignty but to economically empower the Fulani herders, pastoralists who have been raising cattle for generations but were excluded from the formal economy.
Today, the company partners with over 850 herder families, purchasing fresh milk directly from them while providing veterinary support, training, and stable income. In turn, that milk is used to produce Dolima, which means "I want more" in Wolof, a proudly Senegalese range of yoghurts and dairy products. Dolima, is more than just a brand name, it's a statement of national pride and aspiration.
In a recent feature, Bagoré says: "We're not just producing dairy, we're restoring dignity to a way of life and creating real economic opportunity for rural families."
The impact is particularly evident among women, who play a central role in milk production and collection. With financial independence and increased agency, they are now investing in their children's education and building stronger futures for their families.
The story of these herders offer a vivid portrayal of this journey, capturing the sights, sounds, and spirit of Fulani communities and the hope that grows when local knowledge meets visionary entrepreneurship.
In recognition of its commitment to social impact, environmental stewardship, and ethical business practices, La Laiterie du Berger became a Certified B Corporation in 2020, joining a global movement of companies using business as a force for good.
La Laiterie du Berger is not only changing how dairy is produced in Senegal, it is rewriting the narrative of rural Africa from one of subsistence to one of progress, dignity, and pride.
