The donation, described as the largest contribution by a bank towards the national team so far, is expected to aid the team’s preparations for the tournament and also support travelling fans.

Making the presentation at the headquarters of the bank yesterday, the Board Chairman of GCB Bank, Professor Joshua Alabi, said the decision was inspired by the bank’s commitment to supporting the aspirations of Ghanaians through sports development.

He said football continued to serve as a strong unifying force in the country and remained an important tool for national development.

“The donation of GH¢5 million reflects GCB’s commitment to national development beyond banking and finance,” Prof. Alabi stated.

He said the bank had consistently supported sports initiatives because sports promoted discipline, leadership and economic growth.

Free marketing

Prof. Alabi added that Ghana’s participation in the World Cup would provide the country with global exposure capable of attracting tourists and investors.

“When the Black Stars play at the World Cup, Ghana enjoys about 90 minutes of free global marketing,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the contribution would positively impact the team’s performance at the tournament and called on other corporate organisations to support the national team since it belonged to all Ghanaians.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the government, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, commended the bank for its continuous support for sports development in the country.

He described the GH¢5 million contribution as the biggest donation from a financial institution towards Ghana’s World Cup campaign so far.

The minister also praised GCB Bank for supporting the Ghana Sports Fund through capacity-building programmes for administrators and staff.

Broadcast rights

Mr Adams further disclosed that arrangements had been made for Ghanaians to watch the World Cup matches live on television after broadcasting rights were secured for selected media houses.

He assured the bank that the funds would be used responsibly to support the national team’s campaign.

The Managing Director of GCB Bank, Farihan Alhassan, said the bank decided to support the Black Stars because of the passion Ghanaians had for football and its ability to unite people from all walks of life.

He assured the minister of the bank’s continued support for the team as preparations intensified ahead of the tournament.
