MobileMoney Fintech Limited (MMF) has launched its "Ride with MoMo" campaign to encourage commercial drivers across Ghana to adopt digital payments through MoMo Merchant accounts, reducing reliance on cash while improving convenience, security and financial record-keeping.
The initiative, launched in Accra in partnership with the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), targeted ride-hailing drivers, taxi operators, trotro drivers, haulage operators and tricycle riders known locally as ‘Pragya”.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech Limited, Shaibu Haruna, said that the campaign was inspired by the everyday challenges drivers faced when handling cash, noting that many drivers spent valuable time searching for change, guarding cash, balancing handwritten records and worrying about theft or counterfeit notes.
Mr. Haruna explained that the campaign sought to solve those challenges by bringing transport operators into the MoMo Merchant network, allowing passengers to pay fares by simply scanning a driver's GhQR code using the MoMo App or any application that supports the Ghana QR payment system.
He said that the digital payment solution would eliminate the need for physical cash, reduce disputes over change and help drivers separate business income from personal funds while creating a verifiable financial history.
"We want to make the money part easier. Let us make every fare safer, faster and more transparent," he said.
As part of the campaign, drivers who registered as MoMo merchants would earn reward points redeemable for fuel and vehicle maintenance vouchers, while consistent users would continue earning points. Top-performing drivers each month would also receive vehicle upgrade packages.
Chief Business Officer of the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), Akosua Blay, said that the partnership leverages GhQR, Ghana's universal QR payment platform, which enables customers to pay merchants regardless of whether they use a bank account, mobile money wallet or fintech wallet.
She explained that because of the interoperability provided by GhIPSS, customers of MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AT Money and banks including Ecobank, GCB Bank and Absa Bank Ghana could all make payments using the same QR code.
"This means drivers can receive payments from more customers through one QR code while customers pay with the wallet or bank account of their choice," she said.
Ms. Blay added that the platform was secured through Ghana's national payment switch and existing Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, making digital transactions safer than carrying cash.
She encouraged transport operators to embrace the platform, noting that digital payments reduced the risk of losing money through theft, fire or flooding while enabling businesses to reinvest earnings more quickly.
Chief Commercial and Operations Officer of MobileMoney Fintech Limited, Abdul Razak Issaka Ali, said that the campaign would initially run for three months before being reviewed.
He explained that although transaction charges could not be completely eliminated because payment infrastructure comes with operational costs, merchant accounts attract lower fees than personal wallets, making them better suited for businesses.
He urged drivers currently using personal MoMo wallets for commercial transactions to migrate to merchant wallets, adding that registration was free and only required a Ghana Card, while registered businesses would also provide their business certificates.
Mr. Issaka Ali assured users that fraud prevention remained a top priority for MobileMoney Fintech Limited, adding that the company continues to strengthen its security systems, educate customers on fraud tactics and work closely with law enforcement agencies whenever fraud cases were reported.
Manager for Mobile Money Channel Development at MobileMoney Fintech Limited, Faisal Ali said that the campaign also offered weekly and monthly rewards to encourage adoption.
Drivers who completed at least 20 merchant transactions worth GH¢1,000 or more each week would receive 1GB of data, while the top 10 performers in every region each week would earn GH¢500 and 1GB of data. Monthly winners would also receive GH¢1,000.
He encouraged all commercial drivers to register for a free merchant wallet and take advantage of the incentives while helping accelerate the digital transformation of Ghana's transport ecosystem.
