HE’S gone it alone. Yes, and singer and songwriter Kenkubii is not doing just that, he’s venturing the solo road with a unique style he calls Afrobeat-Highlife-Borborbor Fusion.
Although he is yet to come out with a song in his new genre vein, he is working on an upcoming single, Hyira Me, slated for release later in the year.
“Going solo is a big step for me, but it’s also the best way to fully express the sound I believe in. With this Afrobeat-Highlife-Borborbor fusion, I want to carve out a unique identity, stay true to my roots, and still connect with the wider world.
“I know growth in this industry takes time, but I’m ready to put in the works, learn, and keep evolving so that my music speaks to both Ghanaians and a global audience," he told Graphic Showbiz in a chat.
Also, Kenkubii, real name, Komlaga Justice Komla’s goal is to inspire and connect with his audience through music that tells stories of hope, resilience and love.
The music journey of Kenkubii which means ‘eyes wide open’ began in the church, where he sang and played drums, before gaining recognition as lead vocalist for a music group, Brada Yawda.
The group won Best Group of the Year in the Volta Region in 2020 and Best Music Group at the Emerging Music Awards in 2022.
Now on his own, the Volta Region-born musician is shaping a sound that blends traditional Borborbor rhythms and Highlife melodies with the global pulse of Afrobeat.
According to him, his influences include Reggae icon Eric Donaldson, Ghana’s Black Sherif, Chris Brown, Rihanna and Sam Smith.
Beyond music, Kenkubii is also committed to community impact, having supported his hometown, Kpando hospital’s children’s ward. He hopes to use his music not only for entertainment but also as a force for empowerment and change.
He is hopeful, with the support of music lovers and the industry at large, he can position himself as one of Ghana’s promising acts with a sound that bridges cultures.
