Death toll from the accident in Eastern Kenya has risen to 35 after 24 more patients succumbed to injuries at the hospital, local police chief said on Wednesday.
Divisional police commander Simon Birir said the death toll could still rise since most of those injured are nursing serious injuries in various hospitals in Mwingi.
"The death toll has risen to 35 and we fear the number could rise since 18 patients who have been admitted in the hospitals are in serious condition," Birir told Xinhua by telephone. He said the bus, christened Deserve Cruiser which had more than 80 passengers lost control and rolled several times near Mwingi town early on Wednesday.
Birir said the ill-fated bus was heading to Garissa and Mandera districts in northern Kenya from Nairobi and clarified that no passersby or other vehicles were involved in the accident.
The latest accident comes after 24 people lost their lives in separate road accidents across the East African nation. Most of the accidents have been blamed on the careless over speeding by drivers.
