A total of 19 Karimojong warriors in northeastern Uganda are to be tried by the military court martial over illegal possession of firearms, an army spokesman said on Tuesday.
Capt. Henry Obbo, the army's third division spokesman, told Xinhua by telephone that the 19 warriors were arrested in possession of illegal guns in different areas of Moroto, Kaabong, Kotido and Nakapiripirit districts in the semi arid region.
"We captured all these warriors in combat last month. We are done with our enquiries. We are only waiting to arrange the suspects before court," said Obbo.
He said the army recovered a total of 1,003 illegal guns from the warriors in the ongoing disarmament exercise in the region last year.
"We recovered the guns both voluntarily and forcefully. We shall continue with the disarmament exercise until we get rid off all the guns in the region."
The army has recovered over 27,000 out of an estimated 40,000 illegal guns in the region since 2001.
