Andrews Asiamah, a bank cashier charged with stealing GHC 12,501 Ghana cedis belonging to his employers, was on Thursday fined GHC 840 by the Asamankese Circuit Court.
Asiamah, who pleaded not guilty, would serve three years in prison in hard labour if he failed to pay the fine.
The judge, Mr Emmanuel Siameh, said the Kwaebibirem Rural Bank could take legal steps to recover the amount from Asiamah.
Prosecuting, Police Inspector Francis Asare-Cobbina said Asiamah was a cashier of the Kwaebibirem Rural Bank at its agency at Pramkese.
He said between July and September 2008, auditors detected that Asiamah had falsified a customer's account and also fictitiously advanced some loans to himself
The prosecutor said Asiamah withdrew GH¢ 12,501 from the bank.
He said during interrogation, Asiamah initially denied the offence but later admitted it before the Board of Directors of the bank and promised to refund the money and was granted police enquiry bail.
Subsequently, he refunded GH¢ 3,000 leaving the balance of GH¢ 9,501.
He was re-arrested and charged with the offence of stealing.
