A 22-year- old driver Mohammed Muntari, is being held by the Asante-Mampong police for knocking down three pedestrians, killing two of them, with his speeding cargo truck at Mampong.
The deceased were identified as Yaa Ntiamoah, 40, and two-year-old Ellen Sampomaa.
Joseph Adu, 15, who suffered serious injuries, is on admission at the Mampong Government hospital.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Benjamin Kwadwo Gyasi, Municipal Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, told the Ghana News Agency that the accident occurred at about 0530
hours on Tuesday.
The three were on their way to one of the registration centres for the on-going National Identification exercise.
DSP Gyasi said Muntari who was driving to Yeji from Kumasi veered off the road and run over them, leaving the two dead on the spot.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Mampong hospital mortuary.
The MTTU Commander cautioned drivers to be more careful to prevent avoidable accidents.
