The Central Regional branch of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), on Thursday undertook a three-hour peaceful demonstration to press home their grievances on government's failure to honour agreements made in relations to the negotiations of the 2010 Salary Adjustment and other conditions of service.
The members, who numbered about 100 wore red head and arm bands, and carried placards that read among others, "His Excellency, come to the aid of CLOGSAG", "members of CLOGSAG keep the government machinery running", "members of CLOGSAG are hungry, feed us", "our meager salaries cannot meet the increased utility tariffs" and "we deserve fair treatments from fair wages".
They later presented a petition to the Mayor of Cape Coast, Mr Anthony Egyir Aikins, at the offices of the Regional Coordinating Council for onward submission to the President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills.
The Central Regional Secretary of CLOGSAG, Mr. Kwamena Dadzie-Dennis, who read the petition, enumerated some of the agreements reached earlier
this year, and pointed out that the membership of CLOGSAG was to remain on the GUSS salary structure pending ratification of proper placement of its membership.
It said it was also agreed that negotiations should be opened for the Association for the 2010 Salary levels on the basis of the GUSS structure,
and that an agreement was also reached to set up a Technical Committee to address the concerns raised by CLOGSAG.
It however, said as at the time of presenting the petition, none of the agreements had been met and that it seemed "an unfair labour practice is being meted on its membership which seems to perpetuate institutionalized discrimination".
The petition said CLOGSAG is a peace loving group of workers and would therefore not do nothing to infringe on industrial peace in the country.
It consequently urged the President to intervene to get the appropriate agencies to respect the views of CLOGSAG and honour the agreements reached.
Mr. Egyir Aikins commended them for using the right channel to address their grievances and pledged to ensure that the petition gets to the
appropriate quarters.
