An Assistant Manager of the Resource Management Division of the Forestry Commission, has encouraged the formation of environmental clubs in Senior High Schools (SHS) to help students to adopt safe environmental practices.
Mr Emmanuel Adu-Sarpong said more conscious efforts needed to be made to protect the environment and thereby enhance biodiversity and the ecosystem for the sustenance of life.
He was addressing the opening of a day's symposium on climate change organized for selected second cycle schools in the Ashanti Region.
It was held under the theme: "Combating the effects of Climate Change - the Role of the Ghanaian student."
Green Earth Organization, an environmental Non Governmental Organisation, organized the programme to help deepen understanding and whip up enthusiasm of students in natural resource conservation.
Mr Adu-Sarpong underlined the need for the industrialized nations to show strong commitment towards cutting down on greenhouse emissions.
He added that the reluctance of industrialized countries to provide the necessary leadership in the global effort to tackle the climate change was fueling growing depletion of the ozone layer and global warming.
Mr Tom Osei Owusu, Coordinator for School Programmes of the NGO, said his organization was ready to assist schools to plant trees to improve the environment.
