Mr Akumba Ben Asamoaning, Country Director of Amicus Onlus, an Italian non- governmental organisation (NGO) has called for a policy framework that would regulate the activities of NGOs.
Mr Asamoaning made the call at a gathering of paramount chief's, ministers of state and local government officials across Africa at the 2nd Africa Sister City Conference in Accra over the weekend.
The five- day conference, which also attracted participants from Asia and the US was organised by Africa Global Sister Cities International, to promote partnership between local authorities and traditional rulers to facilitate Africa's development.
He called on the chiefs, Ministries, Departments and Agencies to demand accountability and transparency from NGOs.
He said chiefs and community leaders must have their own development plans that fit into the plans of NGOs operating in their communities.
Mr Asamoaning said a large portion of donor funding are channelled through NGOs unlike in the past where governments were the sole recipients of such funds.
, "This trust in NGOs in itself makes them attractive and tempting enough for governments to want to control and direct them," he said.
