Two earthquakes shook southern provinces in Iran Wednesday, injuring 32 people and damaging several buildings, Iranian news agencies said. A 5.8-magnitude quake rattled Fars and Hormozgan provinces, injuring 32 people and damaging 50 percent to 70 percent of residential buildings,
Iran's government-backed Press TV reported.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Seismological Center said the Ahl region on the Fars-Hormozgan border also was rattled by a 5.2-magnitude quake in addition
to the 5.8-magnitude temblor. No information was available about the second quake.
Officials said the quakes, which occurred about 12 minutes apart, were felt on the island of Kish in the Persian Gulf.
Iran's Red Crescent Society was sending aid and distributing emergency relief items in earthquake-stricken villages, the Iranian Students News
Agency said.
