A nurse at the Apam Catholic Hospital, Miss Grace Arthur, has said balanced diet and regular exercises were important prerequisites in the handling of diabetes.
She said a lot of people in the country were diabetic but were unaware of it and advised that people must be examined periodically.
Addressing out-patients of the Hospital, Miss Arthur said the disease could be controlled but has no cure and began to show from age 40.
Apart from hereditary, obesity and sedentary, lifestyles could contribute to the acquiring of diabetes, adding that frequent drinking of water and urinating were some of the symptoms of diabetes, she said.
Miss Arthur said that the ailment was not infectious and advised that those with it must avoid cuts on their legs and toes and should properly treat foot rots.
She said that complications of the ailment include dizziness, blindness, falling into coma and amputation and appealed to diabetic
patients to take the right course of the medication.
