A civil society organisation, has tasked government to establish emergency Military-Police operation centres at the major routes linking Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions (three northern regions) to other parts of the country, to reduce highway armed robberies.
The Upper West Regional Platform on Disaster Reduction, also recommended that one of such centres should be established at Tinga in the
Northern Region for Police-Military patrol of the Wa-Bamboi-Techiman Highway, to curb armed robberies that had resulted in the lost of human
lives and property in recent times.
A press statement signed by Naa Robert Loggah, Chairman of the Platform, copied GNA, called for the establishment of such centres at Wa-Hamile, Wa-Bolgatanga and Sawla-Damango-Fufulso Highways.
He expressed concern that some passengers who travelled from the three northern regions to other parts of the country to transact business had been
robbed, raped, maimed and killed by armed robbers.
Naa Loggah appealed to individuals, organisations, including the Municipal, Metropolitan and District Assemblies and transport unions to provide vehicles to facilitate Police-Military patrols on the routes.
He asked financial institutions and telecommunication organisations to support the operations as part of their social responsibilities to ensure the safety of the people.
Naa Loggah advocated for the installation of communication masts along Maluwe-Tinga stretch of the road and along the Tumu-Nakong to make
communication services available to enable passengers to report the activities of robbers.
He said that the Platform had recorded five cases of street robbery in the Wa Municipality and three robberies on Jirapa, Tumu and Kumfabiala
highways from January to June this year.
