Mr Charles Tuffour, the Chief Executive Officer of Safety Link Consult in Accra, has said one of the key requirements of managing workplace accidents was to understand safety rules and the dangers associated with violations and consequences.
Addressing a Safety Day Celebration organized by Management and Workers of Tema Lube Company (TLOC) in Tema, he said a consistent disciplinary model should be applied by companies for violations.
The day climaxed a week-long Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) activities under the theme: "Zero Accident Is Possible."
He said companies must strive for an injury-free workplace, they should never be satisfied when injuries occurred and they should take all the required actions to prevent them.
Mr Tuffour said Zero Accidents might not necessarily mean safety was in place because as long as accidents could occur and hazards not under control, there was no safety.
"We will need to go further and look at safety as a quality and performance criteria by identifying, evaluating, and controlling hazards
related to unsafe acts and conditions, as well as mitigating consequences when incidents occur."
He commended TLOC for its commitment to protecting not only its reputation but also the environment, natural resources, human health,
safety, and the security of customers, employees, contractors, neighbours and the community.
Mr Joseph Ako Asumang, the Administrative Manager of the company, said since its inception, TLOC had held in high esteem occupational, health,
safety and environmental practices, resulting in operational successes.
Mr Samuel Tetteh Anguah, Managing Director of the company who chaired the function, said the celebration when sustained, would help increase staff awareness on the need to ensure safety at the workplace.
Mr Anguah was of the view that inasmuch as employees deserved to be rewarded for exhibiting best environmental practices, they should also be
sanctioned when their actions or inactions resulted in accidents or hazards.
Mr Albert Owusu Afari who emerged as the best reporter for 2009 in Potential Incidents Reporting, received a parcel and a certificate for his prize.
Maintenance, Administration and Blending Sections took prizes for taking the first, second and third positions in a quiz competition organised to mark the celebration.
