Mr Sam Nasamu Asabigi, Deputy Northern Regional Minister has expressed satisfaction with ongoing works on the Senior High School (SHS) projects in the region.
He expressed the hope that work on the projects would be completed by the end of the year to provide enough classrooms for fresh students admitted for the 2010 academic year.
Mr Asabigi expressed the optimism during a familiarization tour to some of the project sites in the region.
The projects visited by the Minister include Northern School of Business, Islamic Senior High School, Savalugu Senior High School, Walewale
Senior High School and Wulugu Senior High School.
While some of the projects were at the foundation level, others had reached the lentil level and some had been abandoned.
The Minister noted that the region was developing a novelty way of raising funds to address all the infrastructural challenges facing the educational sector in the area.
He commended some of the contractors for the good work done and appealed to those who were still at the foundation level to ensure that the
projects were completed as scheduled.
Mr Asabigi called on the authorities of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to make available enough resources to the contractors to enable them to speed up work.
At the Northern School of Business, a 12-unit classroom block which was started three years ago had been abandoned by the contractor while a six-unit classroom was at the foundation stage and the workers were working busily on it.
Mr Shaibu Wilberforce Adams, Headmaster of the Northern Schools of Business, said the school had put in place contingency plans to accommodate
the fresh students by converting the library into classrooms.
He noted that the major challenge facing the school was inadequate furniture and place of convenience for the females and appealed to the
government and stakeholders in education to assist.
At the Islamic Senior High School, Mr. Issah Yahaya, Headmaster of the school, complained that the schools classrooms were leaking compelling
teachers to stop teaching during rainfalls.
The girls dormitory projects at Savelugu and Walewale Senior High had reached the lentil level and the contractors gave the assurance that they would be completed soon.
All the head teachers the Ghana News Agency (GNA) spoke to indicated that they had put in place contingency measures to temporarily accommodate the fresh students.
