Two farmers at Duasidan near Dormaa-Ahenkro, have been sentenced to a fine of GH240 each or in default three months in jail for refusing to participate in communal labour.
Moris Dagarti and Yaw Ahimadu pleaded guilty to two counts of evading communal labour and refusing to pay spot fines for the offence.
Presenting the facts of the case, a Principal Environmental Health Officer at Dormaa Municipal Assembly, Mr Bukari Alhassan told the Dormaa
Circuit Court presided by Mr Alexander Osei Tutu that the accused lived at Duasidan, but persistently refused to take part in any communal activity in the town.
He said recently the chiefs, assembly members and opinion leaders organised a massive clean-up to de-silt choked gutters and rid the area of
mosquitoes and snakes, but the two were conspicuously absent.
Mr Alhassan said when the leaders of the community later approached them for a mandatory penalty of GH5.00 each both of them refused to pay and dared the leaders to summon them to whatever level.
