Madam Alexandra Totoe, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Volta River Authority (VRA) in-charge of Finance, on Thursday appealed to workers to help reinforce safety to ensure harmony and institutional development at the workplace.
She said occupational safety was the responsibility of every worker and should make personal commitment to improve the working environment.
Madam Totoe made the appeal when addressing staff of the VRA during its Safety Awareness Day Celebration under the theme: "Cardio-vascular
Diseases -Prevention and Control," to draw their attention to the disease and sensitise workers on how to live healthier lives.
Management of VRA has dedicated the last week of November every year to celebrate safety awareness day to drum home the need to practice safety at the workplace.
Activities include clean-up exercises within the VRA premises.
Madam Totoe said the industry was full of hazards and any unsafe shortcuts would result in major fatalities, adding; "As leaders in the
industry, let us continue to seek innovative ideas to improve the safety of the staff".
She advised the workers to adopt the habit of reading the life-saving safety information contained in the VRA corporate safety brochure.
Madam Totoe expressed concern about the increase in hypertensive cases among VRA employees and called on them to check their health status regularly.
Dr Emmanuel Sowah, Medical Superintendent of VRA Hospital, advised the employees to live healthier lives by avoiding foods with high cholesterol.
He said it was necessary for Ghanaians to adopt the habit of consuming fruits saying; "Fibre has a lot of benefits, which when taken delays food from the stomach into the intestines and aids in the control of diabetes".
Dr Sowah said cardio-vascular disease was one of the leading causes of deaths in Ghana and attributed the problem to consuming wrong food and lack of regular exercise.
