Ms Betty Mould-Iddrisu, Minister of Education, on Tuesday, underscored the need for a good educational infrastructure, to create a congenial atmosphere for teaching and learning.
“Good infrastructure and necessary materials should promote learning, and that, the completion of school buildings is paramount to quality education in the country”, she added.
Ms Mould-Iddrisu said this at the handing over ceremony of Airtel Ghana’s Adopted and renovated school, ‘Himakrom Methodist Primary to the education Ministry in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region.
She said the completion of schools infrastructure should be prioritized since it was the basic need to deliver quality education, “there is much to be done in promoting quality education at all levels and that any contribution to support the development of the sector is welcomed”.
Ms Mould-Iddrisu said government was committed to ensuring that school children all over the country, irrespective of their locations, were provided with decent and appropriate infrastructure.
The abolishing of some 2,350 ‘school under trees’ and the ‘shift system’ are some of the intervention being rigorously pursued by government to ensure quality education to enable the children to become productive members of society, she added.
She said the intervention will continue until all infrastructure needs of “our schools, especially those in the deprived communities were catered for”.
Ms Mould-Iddrisu noted that education was essential to prepare the youth for life, which is critical for nation building, “I therefore wish to thank Airtel Ghana, especially for this wonderful gesture. To all others who have been contributing in diverse ways to improve the education delivery system in this country, I say Ayekoo.”
Mr Philip Sowah, Managing Director, Airtel Ghana said the company would support the educational needs of rural communities and that the critical issue was the need to give equal learning opportunities to all the children of the village and its surrounding communities.
He said “Airtel was working closely with the Ministry of Education and other relevant institutions to identify schools in various locations, which needs educational assistance.
Mr Sowah said the adoption of the school and the provision of teaching and learning aids, furniture, school uniforms, shoes, playground and a furnished library shows the company’s commitment at enhancing quality education delivery in the country.
Mr Kingsford Henaku, Headmaster for the school was full of praise for the company and requested that a borehole and teachers quarters be constructed to meet water and accommodation needs of the school.
