Youth Alive, a child centred organisation based in Wa, used the celebration of Saint Valentine’s Day on Monday to sensitise people on the dangers of HIV and AIDS.
The event, which involved voluntary counselling and testing for HIV, took place at Diginafuro.
An Official of Youth Alive, Mr Alfred Toloo, said they organised the event on Valentine Day because sexual promiscuity was on the increase each time the event was observed.
Mr. Toloo advised the people especially the young men and women to use the day to share gifts to people.
He noted that having unprotected sex would not only lead one to having sexually transmitted diseases but could also lead to having unwanted pregnancies which could ruin their future.
He therefore cautioned them to celebrate the day with care.
Mr. Maakpe John, the Regional Coordinator of the Society for Women and AIDS in Africa (SWAA-Ghana), educated the people on how one could get the disease.
He cited blood transfusion, sharing of sharp instruments, tooth brush, sponge and above all having unprotected sex as some of the ways one could possibly come into contact with the disease.
He advised the youth against having multiple sex partners which could lead to HIV and AIDS.
He urged them to practice safe sex by using condoms.
