The government’s interventions in the education of the children of Ghana are to compliment the efforts of their parents but not to take away parent’s responsibilities, says Mr Henry Kweku Hayfron, Mfantseman Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
He said no parent must see the interventions as an opportunity to shirk their responsibilities to their children.
Mr Hayfron expressed regret that because of the School Feeding Programme some schools were enjoying, some parents had stopped feeding their children in the morning before they went to school on the pretext that they would be fed at school, without taking into consideration the time the food would be ready at school.
The MCE made the comments during the distribution of School Uniforms donated by government to school children in the Municipality.
In all, 8,090 uniforms were donated to school children in the Mfantseman East and West free of charge.
The distributions were made by a team, comprising the MCE, MP, Municipal Director of Education and some NDC Executives.
At Ekumfi Srafa Aboano in the Mfantseman East, the out-going Municipal Director of Education, Ms Vivian Etroo urged parents to ensure that their children were enrolled and retained in school.
She said the Free Compulsory Basic Education enjoined children who were not in school to be arrested and their parents prosecuted.
Ms Etroo said with government absorbing everything concerning education of the child, parents had no excuse to make when their children were not in school.
At Otsir near Saltpond, the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West, Mr Aquinas Tawiah Quansah said the Assembly would soon engage the service of some volunteers to arrest children who were not in school during school hours for their parents to be sanctioned.
He said the future of the communities depended on the education of their children today.
The MP urged parents to teach children the way they should go so that when they grow they would not depart from it.
He said 21 communities in his constituency including Otsir, would be hooked on to the national electricity grid very soon, and potable water would be extended to the community before the end of February 2011.
