Obuasi Senior High Technical School held its first Speech and Prize giving Day in over 30 years with a call on the students to stay away from alcoholism, occultism and indiscipline.
Mr. Joseph K. Onyinah, the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, who made the call in a speech read for him, further urged students and all youths to avoid drugs, other crimes and circumstances that would shatter their dreams in life.
“These are the main issues of concern which impact negatively on students’ education. Do not let these negative tendencies shatter your dreams in life. Be reminded that disciplined students become achievers”, he stressed.
The Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Madam Anima Wilson who was the guest of honour, also asked students to avoid lifestyles that prevented them from achieving their ambitions.
She reiterated government’s commitment to investing in the human resource of the country, stressing “government considers investment in the human resource of the country as a top most priority and would go to every length to ensure that our Senior High Schools and other training institutions are equipped with the requisite infrastructure”.
Speaking on the theme: “Science and Technology Education – A tool for National Development Mr. Kwesi Enyan, the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, in a speech read for him, said government needed to do more to utilize science and technology to its fullness and therefore urged education planners to attach great importance to science and technical education in the second cycle institutions.
He added that funding of science and technology education should be the governments’ priority and suggested the institution of bursaries and scholarships to serve as incentives to students to take up the science and other related courses.
Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Akomea, the Headmaster of the school, in his report, enumerated a number of infrastructural challenges facing the school.
“Since its inception 45 years ago, the school buildings at Obuasi Senior High Technical School have not seen any major renovation. The school has no Assembly hall. The library is too small and ill-furnished”.
He added that the girls have no suitable accommodation as they are housed in a temporary structure which was purposefully built as a sick bay.
A number of students who excelled in the various subjects in last academic year were given prizes at the function which was chaired by Nana Baffour Aboagye Agyemang II, Krontihene of Fomena.

(Technical) who had served the school for 30 years was honoured with four-burner gas cooker with oven and a cylinder.
