Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Communications, on Friday called on the National Communications Authority (NCA) to ensure that all telecommunication networks provided quality services.
Mr Iddrisu made the call in Bolgatanga when he visited the Upper East Region to create awareness on Electro Magnetic Fields (EMF) exposure and its effect on health.
He noted that the level of service offered by telecommunication network providers in the region was not the best, saying there was a lot of congestion that caused poor network services to the clients.
Mr Kofi Attor, Administrative and Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Investment Fund for Electro Communications (GIFEC), said it was
government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide.
This brought about the setting up of the fund by Parliament (Act 775) in 2008 to ensure that information and communication transcended from big towns to smaller communities in the rural areas.
Mr Attor said the fund partnered with institutions to send Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to rural areas and currently there were 120 of these ICT centres throughout the country.
He said the availability of ICT and Community Information Centres had facilitated learning, registration, e-mailing and the assessment of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) results by students.
He said computer centres have been established in 38 training schools in the country, 26 in technical schools and telephone stands in second cycle institutions.
“This year we are going to work with the health institutions and the 350 post offices in Ghana,” he added.
