Lance Corporal Kwame Appau of the Nkawkaw Divisional Police accidentally shot his fellow policeman, Lance Corporal Collins Owusu, a driver, in the knee.
Lance Corporal Appau mistook Lance Corporal Owusu as a suspected armed robber who tried to escape and him in the knee.
The victim was said to have gone to the aid of Lance Corporal Appau after he had fallen from a police vehicle at Nkawkaw.
Both policemen were taken to the Nkawkaw Holy Family hospital for treatment but Lance Corporal Owusu whose condition was critical
had been referred to the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for further treatment.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Nkawkaw, the Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Fredrick Asare,
said the incident happened when 10 suspected armed robbers in handcuffs were being conveyed from the Nkawkaw police cell for an identification parade at the Divisional head quarters in a police pick-up.
Lance Corporal Appau, who was escorting the suspects was standing behind the pick-up with an AK-47 raffle but suddenly fell from the vehicle when the driver was negotiating a curve.
Lance Corporal Owusu, who was driving the vehicle, stopped and went to the aid of his colleague.
