Major Emmanuel Owusu-Adansi (Rtd) of the National Communications Authority (NCA), has reminded mobile phone users that the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards registration period, which ends on June 30 this year, will not be extended.
He said at the end of the period, all unregistered SIM cards would be cancelled permanently, meaning users could no longer use
them.
Major Owusu-Adansi, Director, Special Projects of the NCA was speaking to the Ghana News Agency after a programme to enlighten the
general public on the need to register their SIM cards.
He explained that the NCA had embarked on a nation-wide public education exercise to help mobile phone users to easily identify callers and thus weed out anonymous callers who might be up to some mischief.
The Director cautioned people not to allow others to register their SIM cards on their behalf.
“Go and register yourself to avoid any embarrassment because after the expiry date (June 30), all SIM cards not properly registered
cannot be used,” he said.
He mentioned the appropriate and acceptable documents that one could use to register a SIM card as the Passport, National Health Insurance Identity Card, Driving Licence, National Identification Card
and the Voter’s Identity Card.
These are the five acceptable cards for the registration because they bear the picture and the national database of the individual, Major Owusu-Adansi said.
He disclosed that since the exercise begun last year, 92 per cent of SIM cards had been registered, leaving eight per cent, which he
said the Authority was determined to “capture” before June 30.
He commended the public for the tremendous response to the exercise and appealed to those who had not registered to do before the expiry date.
