Students of the Bolgatanga Polytechnic on Tuesday called on Rectors of Polytechnics to improve on their relationship with industries to enable them gain easy access for their industrial attachment.
They said because of the weak relationship that exists between the two, students were not able to gain access to the right job placements.
Mr Mathew Abugbila, the out going President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), who was speaking at the Ghana National Union of Professional Students (GNUPS) week, said polytechnic
education was discriminated against in areas of remuneration.
The event was under the theme “Polytechnic education today, the way forward”,
He said poor academic progress, non recognition of the Higher National Diploma (HND) graduate and job placement hindered the
progress of the polytechnic graduates.
”This is where you and I must, as a matter of urgency, redirect our minds and visions to the core reasons for the establishment of the
polytechnics”, he said.
Mr Abugbila said polytechnic education had, as its objective, to provide new ideas and innovative technologies as well as to provide middle level manpower for the job market but that fundamental
objective was being misplaced.
He said some polytechnics were veering away from the core idea of the establishment of the polytechnics and introducing other businesses
to suit job availability.
He called for polytechnic education to be given the necessary support to enable it function for the promotion of national development.
