Nana Adjei Brempong, Dwirahene of Asante-Mampong Traditional Area, has underscored the need for more determined efforts to address challenges facing the country’s education.
He said countries like South Korea, Malaysia and Hong Kong were able to turn their economies around because of the priority they gave
to education.
He was speaking at the graduation ceremony held by the Saint Monica’s College of Education at Asante-Mampong.
In all, 187 teachers graduated and were presented with Diploma Certificates.
Nana Brempong said it was important to pump more resources into the sector.
He also encouraged teachers to have love for the job they were doing and to also uphold their professional ethics.
The chief counseled the teachers, who are all females to become good examples to the children they would be teaching.
Mrs Christian Sobote, Principal of the College, said they were able to admit only 195 students for the 2010/2011 academic year
because of the quota system.
This brings the total student population to 578 although the college has space and facilities for 1,500.
She mentioned the lack of potable water and soaring electricity tariff as their major headaches and appealed for the government’s support.
Mr Daniel Appau Ohyeamang, the Municipal Chief Executive, appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to make sure that teacher trainees sponsored by the assemblies were posted to teach in districts that had signed contracts with them.
The Right Reverend Dr Daniel Yinkah Sarfo, Kumasi Diocesan Bishop of the Anglican Church, praised the college for the high level of discipline among the students.
The college was established by the Anglican Church in 1936.
