Four days of heavy rainfall have finally started
wane in Jiangxi Province. But even before the downpours began to ease on Sunday night, local residents were already trying to resume their normal lives.
Farmers are starting to clean their crops and add more fertilizer to their fields. Mr. Li,whose 10 square meters of rice seedlings have been flooded, remembers the disaster vividly.
Mr. Li said, "The water in this field was about one meter deep, came up past my knees, and covered all of my seedlings."
The water started to drain out on Sunday morning. Luckily for local residents, most of the seedlings survived. But the farmers still need more time, and have to take great care of their crops, to ensure a healthy harvest in September.
Zhou Yongsheng, Ehu county deputy head, said, "This is the third time this year that our county has been hit by floods, and this is also the most damaging one. The heavy rain has caused huge devastation, mostly to our farmlands."
The damage to transportation in the region is also major. The highway from Jingdezhen to neighboring counties suffered serious devastation. But with the last remaining collapse repaired, traffic flow is set to return to normal.
Zheng Guiqi, chief of Fuliang Highway Transportation Bureau, said, "We got the report of
the collapse this morning, promptly sent a 20-person commando unit to the scene, and will fix the problem in an hour."
These roads located in the mountains. The situation in the area is very fragile, and vulnerable to natural disasters. Once heavy rain hits, collapses are inevitable.
It seems that life is returning to normal. But since it's the region's rainy season, another
round of heavy rainfall is expected in several days. Flood prevention and relief efforts remain crucial.
