The Ghana Red Cross Society has distributed hand washing equipment worth GH¢30,000 to 50 educational institutions and 50 community public toilet facilities in the Cape Coast Township.
Mr John Aidoo, the Central Regional Manager of the Ghana Red Cross Society, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency after he had presented the items to the management of Saint Monica’s Junior High School in Cape Coast.
They include plastic buckets, cartons of guardian soap, specially-designed bucket stands and bowls into which beneficiaries could wash their hands to prevent the outbreak of diseases.
Mr Aidoo said the items were procured with support from the SWISS Red Cross and the International Red Cross societies following the cholera outbreak in Cape Coast Township last year.
He said although no casualties were recorded during the outbreak, there was the need to take preventive measures to safeguard the lives of the people.
Mr Aidoo, on behalf of the executive directors of the Ghana Red Cross Society, the chiefs and people of Cape Coast, expressed appreciation to the donors for the laudable gesture.
Mr Kofi Addo, the Secretary General of the Ghana Red Cross Society, stressed the need for Ghanaians to attach great importance to personal, domestic, and environmental hygiene practices as periodic outbreak of communicable diseases, particularly cholera, was the result of poor hygienic practices.
He tasked junior and senior high school students to make it their duty to educate their community members on the practices of personal, domestic, and environmental cleanliness as well as proper and effective hand washing before eating.
Madam Philomina Charlotte Forson, the Head Teacher of Saint Monica’s Junior High School, who received the materials on behalf of the school, commended the Ghana Red Cross Society for the gesture, saying it has come at the right time.
