The move followed a review of “various elements” that went into running of commercial transport services.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed and issued by the National Chairman of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Kwame Kuma and acting General Secretary of Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Andrews Kwesi Kwakye on behalf of transport operators.

The statement copied the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Information, Energy and National Petroleum Authority explained that the decision was taken in accordance with administrative instrument on public transport fares.

The statement said the increase covered the operations of intra-city (trotro), inter-city (long distance) and taxi cabs.

Transport fare from Circle to Nungua, which used to be GH¢2.40 will now be GH¢2.80 while Odorkor to Circle will move up from GH¢1.60 to GH¢1.80.

Madina to Ablekuma will now be GH¢4.60 instead of GH¢4.00 previously, Accra to Kaneshie GH¢1.40 instead of GH¢1.20, and Kasoa to Circle will go up to GH¢4.00 from GH¢3.50.

Passengers travelling long distance from Kumasi to Accra who pay 20.00 will have to brace themselves to pay GH¢24.00 while those from Accra to Cape Coast will pay GH¢19.00 instead of GH¢16.00.

It therefore urged its transport operators and their members to kindly comply with the new fares and post the fare list at their loading terminals so as to avoid any confrontation with the travelling public.

It also urged the commuters and the general public to willingly cooperate for the successful implementation of the new fares.
