Bishop Vincent Sowah Boi-Nai, Catholic Bishop of Yendi has added his Voice to the numerous clarion calls on the government to return Mission Schools to the original stakeholders to ensure effective management.
He agreed with the view that the education of the citizenry was a shared responsibility because of the complexity of human development.
He indicated that in this vain all Stakeholders needed to get involved in the educational needs of the country.
Bishop Sowah Boi-Nai made the remarks when he addressed the Yendi St Vincent Academy Parent Teachers Association at Yendi in the Yendi Municipality of Northern Region.
According to the Bishop, the recent pronouncement made by the Minister for Education Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh that government was intending to return Mission Schools to the Churches soon was indeed welcome news to stakeholders of Faith-Based Schools.
He announced that in the Pre-colonial era, the churches contributed greatly in establishing schools across the country as well as being at the forefront of providing education of every level with the purpose of enabling students to live to discover the deeper meaning of life and to learn to interact-mutually with others.
Bishop Sowah Boi-Nai Stated that, Yendi Catholic Diocese has over 285 schools which include; Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High Schools.
He said the Chamber Senior High School in Nanumba North District, St Joseph Technical in Saboba District and St Vincent College of Education in Yendi Municipality were some of the Catholic second cycle institutions in the diocese.
According to the Bishop since the State took over the management of Mission Schools in the country, there had been concern over the continuous decline in the quality of education and moral formation among students.
He therefore reiterated the call made by Mr Michael Kenneth Nsowah the Chairman of the Ghana Education Council when he addressed the 5th Graduation Ceremony of Duty Hands Improvement (DHD) College of Health and Education in Kumasi.
In that address he urged the private sector to complement government’s efforts at providing a sound and purposeful education towards nation building since it was not the responsibility of government alone”.
He said there was the need to increase support to Mission Schools in terms of making it possible for them to access the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) and hoped that the returning of Mission Schools would go a long way to Strengthen the partnership among the Stakeholders.
