Mr Anthony K. K. Sam, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, has said there is the need for effective stakeholder engagement in the education sector to ensure that quality results are attained.
He said teacher attitude as well as students receptiveness to teaching and learning in an environment where parents and guardians are more responsible to the needs, positive growth and aspirations of the country’s future leaders has become even more critical in this era where social vices seem to be the order of the day.
The MCE said this during the inauguration of the once defunct Education Oversight Committee for the metropolis.
“The role of government, society and parents for sound education delivery has become more imperative as we seek to grow a better society and future leaders of the country”.
Mr Sam urged the 14-member committee to work hard, identify areas of challenges, as well as find pragmatic solutions to the challenges.
He also urged them to concentrate on deprived and rural settings within the metropolis, bring their needs to limelight since it was only through quality education that voices of such people could be heard and noticed.
Mr Akufo Addo, the Western Regional Director of Education, said Act 506 called for the establishment of such an oversight committee and lauded the STMA for its efforts.
He said community and school relationships was key to promoting quality education and urged the committee members to do more for both the private and public schools in the country.
The committee members include: Mr Anthony K.K. Sam, as chairman, Mr John Arhin, Chairman, Education Sub-committee member, Mrs Elizabeth Akuoko, Metro Director of Education, Ms. Mercy Quarshie, Mr Isaac Quandor, Representative of GNAT, Mr. E. F. Arhu representative of PTA associations and Mrs.Atta Obeng, Representative of School Management Committee and Nana Kofi Abuna V, traditional authorities.
The rest are: Ms Angela Christian, government appointee, Ms Joyce Bagina, Metropolitan Health Director, Reverend Father Gordon Boadi Miezah, representatives of Religious bodies, Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, representative of Islamic unit, Debora Kwabia, Metro Social Welfare Director and Marcarious Zoogah, AD supervison.
Ms Debora Kwabia, the Metropolitan Social Welfare Director, on behalf of the committee assured the assembly of their readiness to work and improve education delivery in the country.
The occasion was also used to hand more than 200 dual desk, 150 mono desk, 30 teachers table and chairs and 20 cupboard costing GHC129,883.00 to the metropolitan directorate of education.
Mrs Elizabeth Akuoko, the Metropolitan Director of Education, expressed gratitude to the assembly for the gesture and pledged to ensure quality service delivery.
