Ghana Reducing Our Carbon (GROC) has organised a summit in Accra to mark the Global Climate Action Summit with a call on Ghanaians to take afforestation serious to reduce the effect of climate change.
The summit is on-going in more than 100 countries and was on the theme: “Rise for Climate to Build a Fossil-free World,” which is a forum that brings leaders from around the world and across sectors together to showcase climate action plan.
This is to help reduce the usage of fossil fuel and build 100 per cent renewable energy for all.
Fossil fuel contains high percentage of carbon and include; petroleum, coals, and natural gas, which affects the ozone layer and therefore causes climate change. Mr Lovans Owusu-Takyi, the Director of the Institute for Sustainable Energy and Environment Solutions (ISEES) who made the call urged the citizenry to change their attitude such as poor waste management, deforestation, bush burning among others which were the factors that contributed to climate change.
He encouraged the people to divert to the use of renewable energy products like solar generators, solar stoves, radio, and fridge among others. “When we adopt and focus on renewable energy, it will help build on technology development and market such innovative product and technologies through inclusive business model,” Mr Owusu-Takyi said.
Mrs Portia Adu-Mensah, the National Coordinator for GROC said the GROC is an organisation affiliated to 350.org and is aimed at championing the need to reduce carbon emission. She said the summit sought to address issues how Ghana could meet the 10 per cent renewable energy mix in 2030.
The 70 participants deliberated on pertinent areas including; attitudinal change campaign, renewable energy project and focus, effective waste management and how young people could take climate action as business. Mr Daniel Yaw Tornyigah, the Director of Policy and Sustainability – Federation of Plastic Manufacturers, Recyclers and Users, Ghana said plastic waste could be useful in renewable energy.
He said policies could be made to empower industry to ensure effective plastic waste management including; recycling, reconstruction of wings of wind turbine and panel of solar system using plastic waste.
Mr Wisdom Ahiataku-Togobo, the Director, Renewable and Nuclear Energy at the Ministry of Energy said the government was committed to working with CSOs, academia, industries and all stakeholders to achieve the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
