New boards for four major health sector institutions; the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives, Medical and Dental Council, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and the Pharmacy Council have been inaugurated.

At the swearing in ceremony in Accra, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh emphasised the importance of regulation and financing in the country's pursuit of universal health coverage and ongoing health sector reforms.

He highlighted the role of the newly sworn-in boards in addressing critical challenges such as non-communicable diseases, workforce attrition, and the increasing demand for quality healthcare.

Mr. Akandoh called on the Medical and Dental Council to ensure ethical and competent care delivery across the country and urged the NHIA to align benefit packages with national health priorities, especially in managing chronic diseases.

The Pharmacy Council was tasked with improving the distribution of medicines, curbing opioid abuse, and enhancing regulatory oversight through public-private collaboration. The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives was urged to take the lead in reforming the health workforce by improving training and professional development to reduce health worker migration.

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) and called on all board members to work collaboratively, keeping the interests of Ghanaian patients at the center of their mandate.
