In a moving display of unity, tradition, and purpose, the St. Augustine’s Past Students Union – USA (APSU USA) hosted its 2025 Annual Congress and Dinner Dance in Greenbelt, Maryland, drawing alumni from across the United States and beyond for four unforgettable days of business, fellowship, and celebration.
Held from May 23 to 26, the Congress marked a high point in the organisation’s calendar, bringing together old schoolmates bonded by the timeless values of Mbo Augustine—faith, discipline, service, and academic excellence.
A Joyous Homecoming, the APSU Way
The weekend began with a spirited “Meet & Greet” at the Temple Restaurant on Friday. The atmosphere crackled with energy as APSUnians traded stories, laughed heartily, and sang with fervour—voices rising in the familiar strains of the College Anthem, “Mbo Augustine,” and the cherished “Adoremus.” Old friendships were rekindled, and new ones sparked, with the customary Jammah drumming in the background.
Saturday morning ushered in the business end of the Congress. With precision and purpose, Convener Dr. Saint Anthony Amofah (APSU ’81) brought the session to order. Annual reports were delivered, finances reviewed, and a historic leadership transition took place. Augustine Abotsi (APSU ’93), the organisation’s inaugural president, ceremoniously handed over to the newly elected President, Thomas Andoh (APSU ’92), after five years of distinguished service.
Charting the Future with Purpose
This year’s Congress stood out with the introduction of breakout sessions—a new feature designed to stimulate focused dialogue on pressing issues. Two standout discussions emerged:
? Support for the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference: APSU USA gave its full backing to the Bishops’ call for a restoration of Church managerial roles in Catholic education. Delegates reaffirmed their belief in the Church’s ability to nurture discipline, mentorship, and holistic education.
? Strategic Development and the APSU Endowment Fund: Members explored bold, forward-thinking ideas, including recognising past and future donors, aligning efforts with the upcoming College Centenary, and building a $1 million fund that will provide long-term support for St. Augustine’s College.
Dignitaries, Dance, and Donations
Special guests included some of the most distinguished names in the APSU fraternity:
? Dr. Ernest Anthony Osei (APSU ’80)– Global APSU President
? Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Adawu– Chairman, St. Augustine’s College Board of Governors
? Dr. Timothy Steele-Dadzie (APSU ’75)– Chairman, APSU USA Board of Advisors
? Mr. JoJo Entsuah (APSU ’75)– APSU USA Life Patron
That evening, all roads led to the Dinner Dance—a glamourous, laughter-filled celebration. The ever-charismatic MCs, Dr. Dee (Dennis Arthur) and Delphine Akorful-HOPSAN, kept the crowd on their feet. But it was more than just music and merrymaking—the night raised a whopping $53,000 for the Endowment Fund, thanks to a rousing fundraising call by Prof. Nathan Austin (APSU ’78).
Awards were also presented to outstanding contributors within the APSU community, further inspiring members to give their time, talent, and treasure.
Faith, Fellowship, and a Flavorful Finish
Sunday morning was sacred, as APSU USA renewed its spiritual connection with the St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. Holy Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Anthony Adawu, with members warmly received by parishioners.
Later that afternoon, the fraternity soaked in the sun at Watkins Park for a family picnic, enjoying Ghanaian delicacies, music, and games. The day ended with a more intimate picnic after-party hosted by an APSU member, cementing friendships old and new.
Setting Sights on Houston 2026
As members said their goodbyes on Monday, there was excitement in the air—“Houston, we have a Congress!” The APSU USA Traveling Congress will move to Texas in 2026, promising another unforgettable experience for alumni and their families.
Legacy and Leadership: The APSU USA Mandate
At the heart of the Congress was a powerful reaffirmation of APSU’s role in shaping lives—not just within the walls of the Cape Coast campus, but across the globe. The official communiqué issued at the end of the Congress reinforced the organisation’s unwavering support for the Catholic Church’s involvement in Ghana’s educational system, citing its crucial role in instilling discipline, mentorship, and values.
With over $3 million contributed by global APSU networks in the past five years alone, the Union’s impact continues to grow. The vision is clear: to ensure the next generation of Augustinians inherits not just buildings, but a legacy of excellence.
Nkotsee! Onward With Faith and Fellowship
As APSU USA passes the torch of leadership and continues its upward journey, the brotherhood remains strong—rooted in shared memories, united in mission, and forever loyal to the alma mater. The Greenbelt Congress was not just an event—it was a celebration of identity, a renewal of purpose, and a joyful reminder that “Once an APSUnian, always an APSUnian.”
